Collecting language data is not enough to build multilingual AI that communities can use, shape, and sustain. In a newly published joint brief, Current AI and UNDP examine how governments and funders can support the full development process while communities retain authority over their knowledge and share in the value created.

Right now the public-interest AI movement has both a problem and an opportunity: we have more talent and institutional goodwill than ever before. And yet, we are generating most of that momentum in silos. This is because two critical ingredients have been missing: a way to bridge our efforts, and an invitation to collaborate on a shared vision for what’s possible.

We mapped the open source AI stack so we can collectively build what’s missing.

At this moment, we feel that our calling is to help transform these individual, decentralised initiatives into a coherent Public Interest AI movement. 

We're delighted to announce our pilot grant cohort, where we are supporting four organisations in sub-Saharan Africa, the Arab region, and the Brazilian Amazon with $3.2M in funding.
