How We are funded

We mobilize public and private donors towards the same mission

As a non-profit, we are transparent by default, including about where our funding comes from.

We have over $432 million in funds already committed, and aim to mobilize $2.5 billion over five years to push the movement forward.

The following information offers a breakdown of funding commitments to date, and defines the funding terms.

Pledged so far

$432 million

These figures represent direct and indirect funding pledged to Current AI over five years, not money already in Current AI’s accounts.

$229M Direct Funding

Direct funding from AI Collaborative is committed and offered on a matching basis.

Additional direct funding from the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Salesforce, and Ford Foundation.

$203M Indirect Funding

Indirect funds pledged to public-interest AI initiatives that align with our strategy via France2030, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Ford Foundation, Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, Hugging Face, ROOST, Google Deepmind.

Funding Definitions

  • Direct means funds committed to Current AI itself, which we receive, hold, and deploy toward our programs.
  • Indirect (Aligned) means funds deployed or to be deployed by partners to public-interest AI initiatives that share our strategy. This capital is not held or deployed by Current AI itself, but it flows toward the same shared goals, and our work helps shape where it goes.
  • Pledged means a funder has agreed to allocate direct or indirect funds.
  • Committed means the funder has signed a legal agreement and earmarked the funds.
  • Received funds are those we directly hold or have already disbursed or spent. These are funds under our direct control, as opposed to funding pledged or committed but not yet received.

We publish these definitions because they matter. Pledged funds represent serious institutional backing for public-interest AI, and committed funds turn that backing into a concrete agreement. At the same time, the disbursement pace is also real, as it determines what we can fund and build today.

An Eye for Scale

While $432 million is a significant amount, it’s just a fraction of what’s required to build a comparable alternative to the leading proprietary AI stacks. We estimate that $2.5B is needed to build a public-interest AI stack over the next five years that's usable, interoperable, sovereign-resistant, and matched to the speed at which the private stack is being built.

Growing to $2.5B in funding will rely on more institutions, governments, and funders stepping up in recognition of the fact that no single country or company should determine how AI shapes our shared future.
