How Our Work is Funded
We advocate for AI built in the public interest, and we will create a different kind of nonprofit to steward it: one that is transparent by default, including about its funding sources.
With over €370 million in funds already committed, Current AI aims to mobilize €2.2 billion over five years towards that shared goal .
$415 million
These figures represent capital pledged to Current AI over five years, not money already in Current AI’s accounts. Breakdown of pledged funding:
Direct funding
$232M over five years. This sum represents funds pledged to Current AI directly via
AI Collaborative (€100M) pledged and offered on a matching basis
French government (€100M), MacArthur Foundation, Salesforce, Ford Foundation, and Google Deepmind
Indirect (aligned) funding
$183M over five years. These are funds pledged by partners to public-interest AI initiatives that align with our strategy. While this capital is not held or deployed by Current AI, it flows toward the same shared goals.
What "Committed" Means
Committed means money that is actually in our bank accounts, or has been disbursed/ spent. We publish this distinction because it matters. The $415 million commitment outlined above represents serious institutional backing for public-interest AI. The disbursement pace is also real, as it determines what we can fund and build today.
An Eye for Scale
While $415 million is a significant amount, it’s just a fraction of what’s required to build a comparable alternative to the leading proprietary AI stacks. We estimate that $2.5B is needed to build a public-interest AI stack over the next five years that's usable, interoperable, sovereign-resistant, and matched to the speed at which the private stack is being built.
Growing from $415M to $2.5B in funding will rely on more institutions, governments, and funders stepping up in recognition of the fact that no single country or company should determine how AI shapes our shared future.
