Current AI

We’re a growing, cross-national partnership with an ambitious, alternative vision for AI’s future.

Who We Are

Founded at the AI Action Summit in Paris in February 2025, Current AI is a global, first-of-its-kind alliance of governments, philanthropists, researchers, grassroots builders, and industry leaders in support of public-interest AI. Together we’re catalyzing the movement for public-interest AI, with more supporters joining every day.

Why We Exist

Many governments are increasingly worried about sovereignty and resilience in AI infrastructure. Currently, most of the AI systems used around the world are developed and controlled by a handful of companies in Silicon Valley. This means that one company's policy change, or one geopolitical shift, can instantly affect millions of dependent users. At Current AI, we believe the solution lies in building open and public technology infrastructure that can at once serve individuals, advance national interests, and catalyze innovation globally.

The public-interest AI ecosystem has all the talent, intent, and organizations. What's missing is strategic coordination at scale. Technology companies operate out of a unified roadmap with shared resources, giving them a strategic advantage. By contrast, across the world, brilliant people are already building AI that serves people over profit, but the work is fragmented.

Current AI exists to give public-interest technologists the same advantage by investing in the connective tissue among people and projects. That, we believe, is what holds a movement together.

What is “Public-Interest AI?”

Public-interest AI is open, transparent, and supports inclusive principles. It should reduce inequality, support public services, and be governed in ways that reflect the needs and values of diverse communities. Simply put: it’s AI that serves people over profit.

Current AI is anchored by the Paris Charter on Artificial Intelligence.

How We're Funded

With over $400 million in funds already committed, Current AI is mobilizing $2.5 billion over five years from a coalition of governments, foundations, and private-sector partners. Funds are entrusted to Current AI in service of building a truly collaborative, collective, and global vision for AI, not one controlled by any single country or company.
